HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation has announced upgrades to its Premacy (known as the Mazda5 in overseas markets) compact minivan in Japan. Popular due to its sporty styling and driving performance, the freshened Premacy goes on sale today at all Mazda, Mazda Anfini and Mazda Autozam dealerships nationwide. Manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (including sales tax) for front-wheel drive (FWD) models range from 1,820,000 to 2,195,000 yen.
Since its debut in 1999, the Mazda Premacy compact minivan has earned plaudits for its efficient seven-seat packaging, outstanding driving performance and sporty styling. Ten years later, the Premacy is currently sold in over 60 countries and has become Mazda’s best-selling minivan*1, with total global sales surpassing 710,000 units*2.
The range topping 20Z model grade now comes with specially designed aluminum alloy wheels and seat and door trim that enhance its sporty appearance. To highlight its sharp lines, exclusive Dark Plum Mica exterior body paint is also newly available for this model grade. In response to high demand, the mainstay 20CS grade has been augmented with a new fuel economy gauge and a freshly designed center panel. With the addition of these features and a full equipment review, the upgraded Mazda Premacy 20CS is even more affordable than before.
All Mazda Premacy FWD model grades qualify for Japan’s eco-car tax incentives, with 50 percent reductions on both the automobile acquisition tax and the automobile weight tax.

General Motors China sales up 38 percent

SHANGHAI (AP) — General Motors Corp. said Wednesday that sales in China jumped 38 percent in the first half of this year, helped by strong demand for minivans and other small vehicles.
Strong growth in China and other emerging markets is crucial for GM’s recovery as it works to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. While GM has slashed jobs and closed factories in the U.S., it is still expanding in China.
GM sold more than 100,000 vehicles a month in China in January-June for a total of 814,442, a record for any half-year, the company said in a statement. That compares with sales of 1,094,561 GM vehicles in China for all of 2008.
The increase in sales was helped by stimulus policies, such as subsidies for replacement vehicles, and by strong growth in inland cities that have lagged behind China’s wealthier coastal areas.
China’s total passenger car sales surged 21 percent in January-May, to 3.36 million units, while total vehicle sales climbed 14.3 percent to 4.96 million units, according to industry figures.
Industrywide sales are forecast to top 10 million units this year. In 2008, China’s auto sales grew 6.7 percent to 9.38 million units — the first time growth has fallen below 10 percent since 1999.
General Motors also said Wednesday it will suspend operations on its production lines in Russia as the deepening economic crisis squeezes Russian consumers’ demand for new cars.

James Bond screeches around hairpin bends in them with a beautiful woman at his side, while they are the car of choice for European royalty in which to parade themselves around the Continent’s more opulent capitals.
Now, at last, the opportunity to pop out to the supermarket behind the wheel of an Aston Martin will be opened to the more conventional motorist.
The Aston Martin Cygnet — a new “luxury commuter concept” car, according to its marketeers — is to be built on the base of Toyota’s existing iQ city car and is likely to be available for less than £20,000.
“Small is beautiful these days,” Ulrich Bez, Aston Martin’s chief executive, said yesterday. “We have to move on from the preconceived ideas regarding what Aston Martin is about.”
What the company has been about is high-end performance cars that sell for upwards of ÂŁ100,000. Even its wristwatches sell for more than the proposed price of the Cygnet.
Mr Bez said that Aston Martin needed to diversify to cope with a sharp fall in demand for its sports cars. “For decades we have seen the big US car manufacturers stick to what they have always done and now they’re on the brink of extinction,” he said.
“This concept will allow us to apply Aston Martin design language, craftsmanship and brand values to a completely new segment of the market.”
It is thought that between 4,000 and 5,000 Cygnets will be built each year. Toyota, attracted by the cachet of Aston Martin, said that it would be the only car that it would make for another manufacturer.
The two companies began their unlikely friendship at the NĂĽrburgring 24-hour race, where they shared garage facilities.
