Toyota’s environmental image challenged be not green enough

WASHINGTON - Toyota Motor Co.’s environmental image has been hit by blowback from the automaker’s call to side with Detroit’s automakers against tougher fuel economy standards in Congress.

The National Resources Defense Council, an environmental group, said Tuesday it had forwarded more than 8,000 e-mails to Toyota criticizing its stance in the fuel economy debate. Toyota and Detroit automakers oppose a Senate bill setting a 35- mile-per-gallon standard by 2020, favoring an easier standard proposed in the House.

Santa Cruz added to state auto insurance plan

State Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner said Tuesday the California Low Cost Auto Insurance program has been expanded to encompass 20 additional counties, including Santa Cruz.

In 42 counties throughout California, the program provides eligible low-income, good drivers with state-required liability coverage for under $400 a year.

Since its inception, 34,161 policies have been issued. Program policies are issued by California licensed insurers and the program is administered by the California Automobile Assigned Risk Plan.

Poizner’s office said the program is self-sustaining and rates are set so that premiums are sufficient to cover losses and expenses in each county.

The California Low Cost Auto Insurance Program began in 1999 as a pilot program in Los Angeles and San Francisco. In April 2006, the department began expanding the program statewide.

Other counties that participate include San Mateo, Santa Clara, Monterey and Santa Barbara.

To be eligible for the program, an applicant must have no more than one at-fault property damage only accident or one point for a moving violation in the past three years; no at-fault accident involving bodily injury or death in the past three years; and no felony or misdemeanor conviction for a violation of the Vehicle Code.

Family income cannot exceed 250 percent of the federal poverty level ($25,525 for a single person, $34,225 for two persons and $51,625 for a family of four.)
