Honda Fit Tops Japan Sales, Ending Corolla’s Reign

Honda Motor Co.’s redesigned Fit compact car overtook Toyota Motor Corp.’s Corolla compact as Japan’s best-selling car model in November, ending a 13-month streak for the Corolla.

Honda more than doubled sales of the Fit to 18,138 cars, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said in a release today. The carmaker introduced the revamped Fit on Oct. 26. Toyota’s Corolla took the second spot as sales fell 10 percent from a year earlier to 15,348.

Toyota claimed eight of the top 10 slots in last month’s sales rankings, excluding minicars. Nissan Motor Co., Japan’s third-largest automaker, took eighth place with the Serena minivan. Compact cars and minivans made up all of the top 10 models.

With minicars included, Suzuki Motor Corp.’s Wagon R was the second-bestselling model behind the Fit. Minicars are powered by engines no larger than 0.66 liters.

The following table shows Japan’s 10 bestselling automobiles, excluding minicars, in November by model, maker, sales, vehicle type and percentage change from a year earlier.
