Honda Freed Beating Toyota Sienta-Nissan Cube Cubic in Japan today

TOKYO, Japan, May 29, 2008– Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced that it will begin sales of a new compact minivan, named the Freed, in Japan on May 30, 2008. This new model fuses an easy-to-use and spacious cabin with stylish design. Special mobility assistive versions—Freed with side lift-up seat and Freed with passenger lift-up seat, also go on sale May 30, 2008—while a Freed wheelchair-accessible model will go on sale June 20, 2008.

Sanyo says to team up with VW in hybrid batteries

German automaker Volkswagen AG will team up with Japan’s Sanyo Electric to develop a lithium-ion battery for next-generation hybrid vehicles, the Japanese company announced Wednesday.By joining forces with Sanyo, which aims to be a world leader in rechargeable batteries, Volkswagen is apparently seeking to catch up with rivals in the race to develop and sell eco-friendly vehicles.

Sanyo and Volkswagen have worked together in the past in battery development. The Japanese company has also supplied nickel-metal hydride batteries to Ford Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co.

Automakers are stepping up their focus on lithium-ion batteries amid increasingly interest in fuel-efficient vehicles at a time of soaring petrol prices.

Peter Birthwhistle, chief designer at Mazda’s European Research and Development Centre, said: “The finished article will be even more radical than the car seen here. It will be aimed at young people and feature the likes of iPod connectivity, sat-nav and Blue- tooth. It will be environmentally friendly, and weigh as little as possible.”

Honda to sell new small hybrid next year

 

Honda will sell a new, improved and affordable gas-electric hybrid in the U.S., Japan and Europe starting in early 2009, underlining the Japanese automaker’s commitment to “green” technology, the company president said Wednesday.

The new model _ to be sold solely as a hybrid, and not as a traditional, gasoline-powered car _ is a key part of Honda Motor Co.’s strategy for the next three years that President Takeo Fukui outlined at Tokyo headquarters.

The plan also included production innovations and expansion in Japan to cut costs so Honda can stay competitive amid soaring material and energy costs, he said.

In addition to the new hybrid, Honda will introduce several other hybrids: a Civic, a new sporty model based on the CR-Z and a Fit subcompact, sold as the Jazz in Europe, Fukui said.

ASHOK LEYLAND AND NISSAN SIGN 3 LCV JVs

 

CHENNAI (May 26, 2008) – Hinduja Group flagship Ashok Leyland and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., today announced the legal formation of the three JV companies for the Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) business in India for vehicle manufacturing, powertrain manufacturing and technology development. This follows the signing of the Master Co-Operation Agreement between the two companies in October 2007.

The shareholding structures of the three joint ventures are as under:

  • Ashok Leyland Nissan Vehicles Pvt. Ltd.,the vehicle manufacturing company will be owned 51% by Ashok Leyland and 49% by Nissan;
  • Nissan Ashok Leyland Powertrain Pvt. Ltd., the powertrain manufacturing company will be owned 51% by Nissan and 49% by Ashok Leyland;
  • Nissan Ashok Leyland Technologies Pvt. Ltd., the technology development company will be owned 50:50 by the two partners.

The aggregate investment in all three companies will be around Rs. 23 billion (approx. 575 Million USD). The enterprise will involve a capacity of 100,000 vehicles in the first phase, to be scaled up subsequently. The plant is expected to start production from 2010/11. Among the three platforms identified, covering applications up to 7.5 ton Gross Vehicle Weight, is an all-new generation Nissan Atlas F24 light-duty truck. In addition, an all-new engine is being developed specifically for LCV applications, as part of the range of Euro 3 and Euro 4 compliant diesel engines.

Mitsubishi Motors and PSA Peugeot Citroën to set up joint venture in Russia

 

Mitsubishi Motors and PSA Peugeot Citroën of France said Monday that they would set up a joint venture in Russia to produce cars starting in 2011.

The factory in Kaluga, located 180 kilometers, or 110 miles, southwest of Moscow, will produce midrange sport utility vehicles for the Mitsubishi, Peugeot and Citroën brands, as well as midsize Peugeot and Citroën vehicles, with an overall capacity of 160,000 vehicles.

Production is due to start in 2011, the companies said.

The two automakers had separate deals with the Russian government granting them financial incentives to assemble cars in the country, and had said they were open to joining hands with undisclosed partners.

Nissan calls claim of end for Micra production at Sunderland ’speculation’

 

 A spokesman at Nissan’s Sunderland plant has told AutomotiveWorld.com that the company does not wish to comment on a newspaper report which claims there will be no UK build of the next generation Micra.

According to the Sunday Times, which quotes Nissan’s chief executive, even with the assistance of a recently weaker pound, the company loses money building the small car at Sunderland. Apart from the UK, most of the model’s markets are in the euro zone.
