Toyota and Nissan take different eco approach

Both Nissan and Toyota have been working hard to come up with eco-friendly car programmes in a bid to become the ‘green’ brand of choice for modern consumers.

The companies are working on battery electric, hybrid and fuel-cell programmes, but the rivals are taking a different approach to one another.

Toyota, for example, sees hybrids are the future, building on the success of the Prius. Nissan, on the other hand, is concentrating on battery technology, working closely with NEC to achieve its goal.

Miguel Fonseca, managing director of Toyota UK, said future hybrids would continue to use petrol rather than diesel for the internal combustion element of the drivetrain.

“Petrol has better efficiency at high RPM than diesel, while electric motors are better at low revs,” he said, offering a different view to Volkswagen and Peugeot, who are both going for diesel hybrids instead of petrol.

Toyota is still working on a miniaturised hybrid drivetrain for its new iQ city car, which will go on sale before the end of the year with conventional petrol or diesel engines.

‘Green Car’ Project Launched in Korea

Korea will launch a large-scale joint government and civilian project to join the group of four leading countries that develop green (future-oriented environment-friendly) cars. Initially, Hyundai Motor, three domestic battery makers — Samsung SDI, LG Chem and SK Energy — the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, and the Korea Automotive Technology Institute will sign a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop lithium-ion batteries for plug-in hybrid cars at the Lotte Hotel in Sogong-dong, Seoul on Monday.

The government plans to provide a fund of W40 billion (US$1=W1,062), W8 billion each year for five years from the second half of this year on the project, while the companies will invest more than W1 trillion.

This is the first time that domestic conglomerates have formed an “alliance” to develop batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries are expected to become the key power source for future hybrid electric cars. They are over twice as efficient, and cheaper to produce, than nickel-hydrogen batteries.

Following competition in the semiconductor and LCD markets, Korea and Japan now look likely to vie for market dominance of this next-generation growth engine.

Sanyo in talks to supply hybrid car batteries

Sanyo, the Japanese electronics giant, said today that it is in talks with six car makers about the supply of batteries for fuel-efficient hybrid vehicles — one of few growth areas in the automotive industry.

“We are talking with more than five or six car makers on the co-development and supply of auto-use batteries,” Masato Ito, Sanyo Electric’s senior vice president, told Reuters.

Sanyo and Volkswagen have been jointly developing lithium-ion batteries as the race to the next generation of hybrid cars speeds up. Lithium-ion batteries are capable of holding more power than the nickel batteries that power the current hybrids.

Toyota plans to start producing lithium-ion batteries for its market-leading Prius next year in a joint venture with Matsushita Electric Industrial. Nissan has a joint venture with NEC to do the same.

Carmakers propose delaying E85 launch in Thailand

Local automobile industry executives say the government should delay the launch of E85 fuel, a mixture of 85% ethanol with petrol, until it can identify specific alternative fuels to be promoted alongside vehicles that can use them.

It is still too early to introduce E85 given that there are almost no cars available to use the fuel mix, said Suparat Sirisuwangura, the president of the Thai Automotive Industry Association (TAIA).

The commercial launch of E85 would also affect the eco-car project, which is being promoted by the government as a means to make Thailand a regional leader in small, fuel-efficient vehicles, said Mr Suparat during a meeting with Industry Minister Mingkwan Sangsuwan.

The eco-car project was announced last year and local automakers are only beginning to create production lines for the new vehicles, Mr Suparat noted.

Don’t forget Hyundai in rush to produce hybrids

Don’t forget Hyundai in rush to produce hybrids

Hyundai is planning to unveil its first hybrid this fall at the L.A. Auto Show as part of a seven-model product blitz over the next 24 months.

A hybrid version of the Sonata, Hyundai’s best-selling car, will likely be introduced for sale in 2010 — amid an increasingly crowded field of gas-electric hybrids, including plug-ins.

“We’ll be coming to market with lithium-ion technology,” said John Krafcik, vice president for American product development. That’s the battery chemistry that GM is hoping to develop for its Chevrolet Volt electric-drive car.
