Electric car firm powers up

In 1934, Alfred Renz, the president of Detroit Electric Co., perhaps seeing the end of his electric car manufacturing company that would come in a few years, told the Free Press, “We’re the last manufacturing company of electric passenger automobiles in the United States — in fact, in the whole world.”

With interest in electric cars growing, the Detroit Electric Co. has returned though far away from the city that bears its name.

A Dutch-based company that purchased the rights to the Detroit Electric name because of its historical legacy announced plans Tuesday to produce affordable electric cars by the end of 2009 in Malaysia.

Detroit Electric is working with Proton in Malaysia, and company chief executive Albert Lam said they are talking to unnamed automakers in Germany and the United States.

An Associated Press journalist who drove the sports car at a news media event in Malaysia said it went from zero to 62 m.p.h. in less than five seconds, comparable to gasoline-powered sports cars. The cars will have a range of about 200 miles on a full charge after keeping them plugged into an ordinary electric power outlet for seven to eight hours.

Nissan Note European Market MPV facelifted

To maintain its place as one of the most innovative, space-efficient and popular accessible compact cars on the market, a wide range of changes and improvements have been made to Note.

The most obvious changes can be found to the exterior design, where the front end benefits from a completely new design of grille, bumper and headlight, lending the Note a more premium and sleek appearance.

At the rear, the signature ‘boomerang’ lights are now darker, another discreet change which adds to the Note’s premium feeling. Two new designs of alloy wheels – 15” and 16” – are available, while a new eye-catching pale green exterior colour called Cider has been developed.

For the driver, a new combi-meter has been introduced, giving improved legibility and clarity and there is also a new central instrument panel, giving a cleaner appearance to the centre console.

Under the skin, improvements have been made to the Note’s suspension to improve ride comfort, while improving responsiveness, knowing that customers consider driving enjoyment a key priority.

GM reduces leases, spares Cadillac

While automakers have cut back on lease incentives, General Motors Corp., at least this month, is not doing that with Cadillac.

GM on Friday informed Cadillac dealers of new lease incentives, through its GMAC financing arm, on 2009 Cadillacs, as well as the Saab 9-7X SUV, to last through Sept. 30. That makes the Cadillac lineup and one Saab model GM’s only vehicles in the United States with discounted leases through GMAC, said GM spokesman John McDonald.

GM, which still is scaling back on its leasing incentives, is singling out Cadillac and Saab as a competitive move because leasing tends to be popular in luxury segments.

Honda goes to 4th past Chrysler in August 2008 sales

Honda passed Chrysler last month for fourth place in U.S. auto sales this year, as high fuel prices pushed customers toward Honda’s small cars at the expense of the trucks and sport-utility vehicles that make up the core of Chrysler’s line. Honda, with year-to-date sales of 1,083,957 vehicles through August, exceeded Chrysler by just 7,787. “It’s a big move, but it’s not an unexpected move,” said George Magliano, the New York-based director of auto forecasting for consultancy Global Insight. He predicted that Honda will finish the year ahead of Chrysler and hold the lead for at least the next few years. “This is not something that’s going to go away,” he said, referring to the high fuel prices that have boosted Honda’s prospects. But David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Mich., stops short of saying that Honda will remain ahead of Chrysler. “It doesn’t necessarily indicate a long-term trend,” Cole said. Overall, U.S. auto sales were down 16 percent for the month and down 8 percent for this year, according to the Automotive News Data Center. Continue reading →
