January 30th, 2009 — Auto show / Motor Show, nissan

Nissan put out an incredibly brief press release about its plans for the Geneva Motor Show, including one line about a new concept that will debut this March. After a bit of snooping we’ve got a name and a genre: it’s called the Qazan and it’s a compact crossover designed to slot in below the Euro-market Qashqai.
We have no clue what the Qazan will look like at this point, but with its market targets being the Kia Soul and Scion Xb, we can assume that it’ll carry some of that same boxy, utilitarian flavor. But we all know what happens when you assume.
The above image is a teaser sketch for the upcoming Nissan A-segment vehicle which the Qazan Concept is likely derived from. The production model will jimmy it’s way into the lineup below the Euro-market Qashqai and is scheduled to be built at Nissan’s Sunderland factory in the UK. It will replace the current Micra line that resides there.

January 29th, 2009 — award, nissan

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced that the X-TRAIL 20GT featuring clean diesel engine, released in September 2008, has won the ANRE (Agency for Natural Resources and Energy) Director-General’s award in the 19th annual Energy Conservation Prize. This is the second consecutive year that Nissan has won the prize awarded by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
The award is open to the public, and covers a wide range of energy conservation innovations, including use of new energy- and resource-saving or high energy-efficient materials, equipment and systems for non-military use. It recognizes innovative ideas to help accelerate wider commercial application of new energy conservation technologies.
Nissan’s X-TRAIL 20GT featuring clean diesel was recognized for its cleaner emissions in comparison with original diesel engines. As the first vehicle in the world to achieve Japan’s stringent “Post New Long-term Regulations”, it provides powerful acceleration, high torque and lower CO2 emissions. Compared to a car with a 2.5-liter gasoline engine with the same power output, fuel consumption was improved by approximately 30%, which means the reduction of fuel of 200 liters or CO2 emission of 267 kg annually*.
Specific technologies adopted are as follows:
<Emissions Reduction Technology>
Complies with the new emission regulation, “Post New Long-term Regulations”, starting in October 2009.
- 1600 bar common rail system
- Double swirl port
- EGR cooler
- Diesel particulate filter (DPF)
- Lean NOx-trap catalysts (LNT)
<Noise and Vibration Reduction Technology>
Adopted as measures against noise and vibration, the disadvantages of the current diesel engine.
- Piezo injector
- Balancer shaft
Nissan received this award for second consecutive year, followed by its eco-driving service available on CARWINGS navigation system awarded last year. X-TRAIL 20GT has also been awarded the 2008 Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Prize in the Eco-Products Division of the 2008 Eco-Products Awards.
Under the Nissan Green Program 2010 mid-term environmental plan, the company aims to develop and introduce new technologies, products and services that lead to real-world reductions in CO2 emissions, cleaner emissions to preserve the air, water, and soil, and recycling of resources.
* Annual total mileage:9,807km (Report by Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry), converted in 10-15 mode.
January 29th, 2009 — honda

The 2008 overall bike market grew 7%, due to several positive factors including the fluctuation in oil prices that led consumers to switch from cars to motorcycles, especially the family bikes, as well as the high popularity of PGM-FI technology. As Honda is the pioneer of PGM-FI and prominent in the family category, it was therefore able to maintain its leadership for 20 consecutive years.
Teerapat Chivapong, Sales Director of A.P. Honda Co., Ltd., said the number of motorcycle registrations in 2008 totaled 1,703,376 units, compared to 1,598,876 units last year, representing a 7% increase, or 104,500 units.
Positive factors, especially during the first 2 quarters, included increased disposable income for farmers due to higher commodity prices and increased access to funds thanks to the government’s grass roots economic stimulus program.
In 2009, the shrinking market will result in a change in consumer behavior with an increased emphasis on value for money and benefits. The PGM-FI family motorcycles are the best answer to consumers’ needs. Honda rapidly responded to this by launching the new Wave 110i model at the beginning of the year to offer a new standard of family motorcycle.
The details of registrations in 2008 were as follows: Family motorcycles had a 51% market share and sales of 874,191 units representing a 9% increase, A.T. motorcycles (Automatic Transmission) recorded a 45% market share and sales of 763,683 units with a growth rate of 5%. Family-sport models faced an 8% decline with sales of 47,149 units and a 3% market share. Sport models grew by 3% with 1% market share and sales of 11,325 units. Other categories recorded sales of 7,028 units.
If categorized by sales volume of each brand, Honda had a market share of 68% with 1,150,568 units, Yamaha had 26% and sales of 439,027 units, Suzuki sold 84,013 units with a 5% market share, Kawasaki sold 10,341 units with a 1% market share, JRD sold 4,278 units, Platinum sold 2,321 units, Tiger sold 1,150 units and others cumulatively sold 11,678 motorcycles.
January 29th, 2009 — Auto show / Motor Show, porsche

It perhaps is the ultimate 911, and now it’s getting even better. Porsche will unveil an updated 911 GT3 at the Geneva motor show on March 3 with engine and chassis refinements that bolster its gripping performance.
It goes on sale in the fall as a 2010 model with a sticker of $113,150, including shipping.
The naturally aspirated six-cylinder boxer engine is boosted 20 hp to an output of 435 hp–the result of an increase in displacement to 3.8 liters and vario-cam technology on the intake and exhaust. This grows torque for everyday driving, while the GT3’s performance chops also are reinforced: 0-60 mph in four seconds flat and a top speed on the track of 194 mph.
The driving experience also is helped thanks to Porsche’s active suspension management, which stiffens the springs, and antiroll bars. This makes for better handling in sport mode, the company says. In a first for the GT3, it comes with stability management, which includes suspension mapping like the GT2. Drivers can turn off stability and traction control in separate steps.

Porsche says the naturally aspirated boxer engine offers “a significant increase in torque at medium engine speeds, which is particularly significant in everyday motoring.” Zero to 160 km/h is reached in 8.2 seconds. Top track speed is 312 km/h.
The 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 will go on sale at Canadian dealerships in October at a price of $138,100.

###Press Release###
Porsche AG will launch the most powerful, fastest and most refined 911 GT3 ever at the Geneva Motor Show on March 3, 2009. The normally-aspirated GT3 is the latest addition to the new 911 series and applies a wide range of know-how gained in motorsport – making it truly impressive not only on the road, but also on the racetrack.
The 911 GT3 achieves higher standards in two key areas: performance and driving dynamics. Thanks to an increase in engine capacity to 3.8 litres and the fact that both the intake and, for the first time, the exhaust camshafts are adjusted by VarioCam, the naturally-aspirated six-cylinder power unit develops 435 bhp, up 20 bhp over its predecessor.

January 29th, 2009 — GM, chevrolet

General Motors (GM) has postponed its Flint, Mich., plant that was to make engines for its Chevy Volt vehicle, FOX Business has learned.
GM confirmed to FOX Business’s Jeff Flock that it had cancelled construction contracts on the plant, saying it does intend to move forward with the new plant at some point, but because of economic conditions it is halting construction at this time.
It’s “part of the tough, wrenching decisions being made in Detroit these days. On the positive side, the urgency they are facing now is forcing these types of difficult decisions which in the end are probably best for the health of the company,” a source told Flock.
GM said it is “not ruling out” the possibility of making the Volt engine at its existing Flint engine plant.
The Volt, an electric car that GM has trumpeted as a big part of its future success in a world gravitating toward energy efficiency, was scheduled to be ready by 2010, but this development leaves its future up in the air.
