Auto industry braces for gloomy August 2008 sales results

U.S. and foreign automakers are slated to release their August sales results for the United States later today, and they are expected to be dismal, as droves of consumers continued holding off on purchases of big cars and trucks.

The consumer automotive Web site Edmunds.com previously predicted an industrywide sales decline of 14.4% for the month, compared to the same period a year ago.

“Don’t expect to see a major recovery for the remainder of the year,” Jesse Toprak, executive director of industry analysis for Edmunds.com, said in a report that predicted the biggest sales declines would be on the backs of Detroit automakers, who have been losing sales all year.

Edmunds.com estimated that August sales would fall by 34% at Chrysler LLC, which has stopped leasing, 27.5% at General Motors Corp. and 16.3% at Ford Motor Co.

The biggest Japanese automaker, Toyota Motor Corp., is expected to post a 7.2% decline. At half the overall market’s expected decline, that would continue Toyota’s U.S. trend this year: losing sales but gaining market share.

Meanwhile, Edmunds.com predicted that Honda Motor Co. would post a small 0.9% improvement, with Nissan Motor Corp. posting a larger 2.3% gain.

Toyota Honda Nissan Japan’s top automakers report July production jump

Japan’s top three automakers said global production in July rose to records for that month, highlighting solid growth riding on their reputation for fuel-efficient models amid soaring gasoline prices.

Toyota Motor Corp. - close to passing up General Motors Corp. to become the world’s biggest automaker - said Wednesday that worldwide output rose 10.2 per cent in July from a year ago to 812,147 vehicles.

Honda Motor Co., Japan’s second-biggest automaker, reported July production jumped 17.7 per cent to 342,152 vehicles. Demand for its Fit subcompact, the best-selling car in Japan for the ninth month in a row, has benefited the company.

Nissan Motor Co. also racked up record production for July at 315,975 vehicles, up 26.8 per cent on year, on strong sales of its Maxima and Altima sedans in the U.S. and the Teana and other models in China.

The robust growth for the Japanese comes at a time when soaring gas prices have hurt the world’s auto industry.

Passenger car sector growth slows in china

China’s passenger car market is slowing faster than expected, as a result of a fuel price hike, the slowing economy and the rising vehicle purchase tax. It reported the slowest annual growth rate in two years in July.

The sector has maintained a high level of growth of between 20 and 30 percent annually since 2005 and consequently China has been seen as the most important market for global auto conglomerates.

However, statistics from China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) revealed that last month, sales of sedans, multipurpose vehicles and sport utility vehicles in China climbed 6.79 percent from a year earlier, the smallest monthly gain and the first single-digit rise in two years.

With 488,200 domestically produced passenger cars sold nationwide in July, down 17.02 percent month-on-month, China’s booming auto market is suffering the fifth consecutive month of decline this year.
