FordMotor Co. said today that July sales for its European division dropped 4.7% in July along with an overall industry slump.

Ford’s sales fell by 7,300 units to 149,800 in July compared with 157,100 for the same month last year. Sales of the Focus, Ford’s top-selling car in Europe in July, fell by 1,200, or 3.7%, to 31,200.

Still, Ford said sales in Russia soared almost 26% to 19,100 units in July. Ford also said European sales for the first seven months of the year are up 2% to 1.2 million vehicles.

“Despite the economic headwinds affecting the industry, we are on track to sell more vehicles than we did last year – and 2007 was already a record year for us,” Ingvar Sviggum, Ford of Europe’s vice president of marketing sales and service said in a statement.

Ford of Europe, based in Cologne, Germany, covers 51 markets, including 19 primary European countries and 30 other countries including Russia, countries in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Southwest Asia.
