GM to build new Flint plant for Volt generator

General Motors Corp. today announced it will invest $370 million in the United States to build a new manufacturing plant in Flint for its global 4-cylinder engines.

GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner said the plant will begin production in 2010 and will be the exclusive manufacturing facility in North America to produce the Chevrolet Volt’s onboard generator.

If GM’s suppliers can develop sufficiently powerful lithium-ion batteries, the small car powered by an electric motor is expected to drive 40 miles on a fully charged electric battery. Beyond that, the Flint-made engine will produce electricity for the electric motor, extending the vehicle’s range by hundreds of miles.

“We are confident that Flint is exactly the right place to build our all-new powertrain plant,” Wagoner said after entering to rousing applause in an outdoor tent at the Flint Powertrain facility.
