Hyundai and Kia cars both made the top 10 of the 2008 Car Reliability Survey issued on Sunday by Consumer Reports, an American organization that reviews consumer products and services. This is the first time the Korean automakers’ models were included in the top 10 list of the annual survey.
According to the survey, Hyundai cars ranked 8th, up 7 spots from last year, while Kia cars came in 10th, up 12 spots from last year. Consumer Reports picked Avante in the compact car category and Lotze in the family car category as Hyundai and Kia’s best models, respectively.
Excluding Hyundai and Kia, the remaining spots in the top 10 were all taken by Japanese cars. Toyota brands earned high ratings with Scion, the North American-only brand, ranking 1st, Toyota 4th, and Lexus, the company’s luxury line, 5th. Honda’s luxury brand Acura was placed in 2nd and Honda in 3rd place. In addition, Nissan’s luxury model Infiniti came in 6th, Subaru in 7th and Mitsubishi in 9th.
On the other hand, models from American and European manufacturers, which have been directly hit by the financial crisis, ranked low on the reliability list. Ford’s three brands — Lincoln, Mercury and Ford — ranked 11th, 15th and 17th. Most GM brands rated below average. Buick ranked 18th, Chevrolet 24th, Pontiac 29th, Cadillac 31st, and Saturn 33rd.
Among European products, BMW’s Mini, coming in 13th, received the highest rating. BMW came in 20th, Audi 22nd, Volkswagen 25th, and Mercedes-Benz 27th, falling far short of their reputations.
