Dongfeng Nissan likely to make electric cars for Chinese market
December 22nd, 2008 — China Automotive Movement News
(China Knowledge) – Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicle Co, a joint venture (JV) between Dongfeng Motor Corp and Japan-based Nissan Motor Co, is reported planning to manufacture electric vehicles under Nissan brand for the Chinese market, as per industry sources.
The move is in line with the Japanese automaker’s global strategy to massively produce electric cars in 2010. Nissan is in talks with China’s auto authorities for local production of its electric cars for the Chinese market.
The new electric car facility will probably be located in Beijing or Shanghai, said Dongfeng Nissan.
Dongfeng Nissan plans to start the local production in the second half of 2010 and locally-produced electric cars are expected to be available in the Chinese market by 2012, sources reported.
Prior to the local production, the electric cars will be imported to the Chinese market initially.
China is one of the most important electric car markets and the company will further explore the market with new plans, sources said, citing Yasuaki Hashimoto, president of Nissan Motor (China) Ltd, at the 2008 Guangzhou Auto Show last month.

The Renault-Nissan alliance is pushing forward its giant project of electric vehicles and the Nissan electric car is expected to be launched in 2010. Nissan’s Chinese venture Dongfeng Nissan will also put its electric car on sale in China in 2012, said auto.163.com today.
Earlier this year Nissan’s joint venture with electronics maker NEC Corp announced the plan to invest 12 billion yen ($115 million) to start mass-producing lithium-ion batteries, a technology widely viewed as vital to electric, hybrid and fuel-cell vehicles. The push into advanced lithium-ion batteries comes as Japanese automakers invest in an array of new eco-friendly car technologies amid soaring prices at the pump.
Nissan has been slower than rivals Toyota Motor and Honda Motor to embrace petrol-electric hybrids, but it aims to become the industry leader in electric vehicles. “Nissan firmly believes that the ultimate solution for sustainable mobility lies in zero emission and the hybrid is only a transitional technology,” said an executive president of Nissan.

Shanghai, October 6 (Gasgoo.com) By September 2008, China has nine automakers who have stepped across the threshold of making one million vehicles. The latest member of this “1-million-car club” is Dongfeng Nissan, said xinhuanet.com yesterday.
Dongfeng Nissan, a joint venture between Dongfeng Motor Corp and Japan’s Nissan Motor Co, celebrated its 1 millionth car rollout on September 19 in its passenger vehicle factory located at Huadu district, Guangzhou. The 1 millionth car, X-Trail, is Nissan’s latest SUV model which is going on sale in China in October.
Up to date, the nine automakers in China’s “1-million-car club” are Shanghai VW, FAW VW, Tianjin FAW, FAW Toyota, Shanghai GM, Guangzhou Honda, Chery Auto, Beijing Hyundai and Dongfeng Nissan. Of the nine companies, Chery and Tianjin FAW are own-brand Chinese automakers, while the seven others are joint ventures with global carmakers.
Since the JV’s founding, Dongfeng Nissan has achieved the one-million-car goal in five years, like Beijing Hyundai who announced the rollout of its 1 millionth car seven months ago. By September 1, 2008, FAW Toyota had also completed the output and sales of its 1 million vehicles. Volkswagen’s two Chinese joint ventures Shanghai VW and FAW VW made their 1 millionth cars 15 years and 12 years, respectively, after their birth.
Over the past 30 years, Chinese auto industry has developed rapidly, especially in the field of joint ventures with global carmakers. China has now become the world’s second largest auto market after the United States. More and more Chinese carmakers are moving toward their goals of manufacturing 1 million cars.

September 25th, 2008 — China Automotive Movement News
Shanghai, September 25, 2008 (Gasgoo.com) By Kelly
Dongfeng Nissan, a joint venture between Nissan Motor Co and Dongfeng Motor Corp, will develop a C-platform sedan in its own research and development (R&D) center by 2012, Dongfeng Nissan vice general manager Ren Yong said to Beijing Times on September 19.
The model’s design and research will be completed between 2010 and 2012, Ren disclosed. The R&D center of Dongfeng Nissan passenger vehicles has embarked on the work for this new model.
As an all-new C-platform sedan, the new model’s intellectual property rights will belong to Dongfeng Nissan, but the model will also carry the Nissan logo, Ren said. However, if Nissan Motor would like to produce the model in other global enterprises, they need to pay Dongfeng Nissan the technology transfer fee, he added.
Ren also said that after 2010, the R&D center of Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicles Co will develop cars at the same time with Nissan’s other R&D centers in the world.
It is reported that the C-platform originally belonged to Nissan. Several models are born from this platform, including Sentra, Serena and Dongfeng Nissan’s X-Trail and Qashqai.
