Key Features of the Step WGN

Exterior Design
・ The exterior design features a dynamic square form that expresses spaciousness and comfort. It imparts a feeling of interior roominess and comfort, along with ease of driving.
・ The front mask imparts a feeling of unity between the solidly sculpted front grill and large-sized headlights, for an intrepid expression that suggests girth and presence.
・ The waistline has been lowered and the center pillars and rear quarter pillars colored black to create a sense of continuity between the rear quarter windows and the rear window, giving expression to a bright, expansive cabin.
・ The roof appears to slope rearward relative to the forward-slanting lower body, creating a dynamic side silhouette while securing space for the second- and third-row seats and the tailgate opening.
・ Nine color variations are available, including two new colors.

Interior Design
・ The interior design offers enhanced driving ease and ease of use for various purposes. It delivers an easy-to-drive, comfortable, fun-to-use space.
・ The dashboard features a horizontal motif, spreading out to either side. Three-dimensional sculpting is used to position the controls conveniently in front of the driver, while the instrument panel is positioned higher up and farther away, placing items requiring visual monitoring nearer to the driver’s line of sight with minimal re-focusing required.
・ The 3D, self-illuminated gauges are grouped by function and feature a three-dimensional, front-to-back layout. An ‘ECO ring’ changes color to indicate fuel consumption in real time, thus helping the driver improve fuel economy.
・ The urethane pads employed in the first- and second-row seat cushions have been made softer and upholstered with high-elasticity material for improved fit and seating comfort.
・ A wooden-style floor in the second and third rows, available as a factory option*9, gives the interior the feel of a living room.

*9 Available on the G L Package, L, and Spada S and Z FWD types

Powertrain
・ The 2.0-liter i-VTEC engine combines powerful low-end torque with comfortable driving performance. In addition to controlling valve timing, the variable intake system also uses DBW (Drive-By-Wire) to select the optimum throttle valve opening, achieving a significant decrease in pumping losses due to intake resistance. This results in a major improvement in fuel economy.
・ The torque converter-equipped CVT delivers outstanding fuel economy along with smooth driving free of shift shock, responding fluidly to the driver’s needs across a wide range of driving conditions.
・ Enhanced engine and transmission performance and lightening throughout contribute to improved fuel economy, while ECON mode further contributes to improved real-world fuel economy.

Packaging
・ Built on a low-floor, low-center-of-gravity package, the new Step WGN’s overall height has been increased by 45mm to achieve the roomiest cabin interior in its class*1, with a cabin height of 1,395mm*6. Head clearance has been significantly increased in all three rows, contributing a relaxed feel while driving and greater ease of movement within the cabin.
・ Overall length has been increased by 50mm*5 and the rear pillar oriented vertically, creating a longer cabin. The result is a best in class*1 3,095mm long cabin, with increased tandem distance between the first- and second-row seats.
・ Innovations to rear floor construction, including a broadly curving rear frame that extends from behind the rear wheels to the outer extremities of the body, open up enough space to allow the third-row seats to be stored flat under the floor, creating a spacious cargo area.
・ Window area has been expanded by extending the side windows vertically and the rear quarter windows to the rear, augmenting the visual sense of spaciousness.
・ A wider roof with optimized positioning of roof-side structural components creates enough space for a sky roof*7 that, at 1,400mm long by 840mm wide (internal dimensions), features a total glass area among the largest in the world*8.

Utility
・ Under-floor storage for third-row seats results in a flat, easy to use cargo area, allowing bicycles or other large objects to be loaded more easily.
・ The cargo area floor has been lowered and the height and width of the tailgate opening increased to create a squarer-shaped opening for outstanding convenience.
・ The standard second-row 6:4-split tumble seats feature a one-motion design that allows the seat back to be folded down and then the seat to be flipped up, simply by pulling on either the seat-side reclining lever or the strap located on the back of the seat. The seats can be set to a variety of configurations with a few simple operations. And, with the 6:4-split, tip-up and slide seats, available as a factory option, the center portion of the second-row seat can be folded away to enable smooth passage from the first- to the third-row seats*9.
・ A full complement of storage compartments, including a convenient, oversized tray on the dashboard that starts at the center and extends toward the passenger side, further enhances ease of use.
・ The new Step WGN is easier to get in and out of than ever, with a wider slide-door opening to complement the low-floor design that allows passengers to enter the second-row seating area with a single step.
・ Visibility has been improved thanks to a cross-sectional shape for the front pillar that makes it appear thinner to the driver and lowering the lower edge of the front door window by 25mm. Larger rear quarter windows and rear windows further enhance the all-around broad, panoramic view.

Body
・ Front-end rigidity has been improved through such measures as adding closed cross-section materials to connect the front bulkhead to the upper frame and employing a closed cross-sectional configuration for the shock absorber attachments.
・ Rigidity of the rear shock absorber attachments has been improved by surrounding the rear shock absorber housing with the rear frame.
・ Transmission of vibrations to the cabin area has been effectively controlled by reducing sources of noise and vibration and increasing overall body and chassis rigidity. Other measures, including acoustic pressure control in body panels used to eliminate cabin hum and expanded use of sound damping and insulating materials, achieve outstanding interior quietness.

Chassis
・ The front suspension features McPherson struts for their outstanding space efficiency, which contributes to the short-nose design.
・ The rear employs an H-shaped torsion beam suspension with a compact design that plays a major role in realizing the low-floor, low-center-of-gravity platform.
・ Despite its long wheelbase, the all-new Step WGN features a best in class*1 minimum turning radius of 5.3m. Combined with EPS (Electric Power Steering), this provides superb maneuverability that facilitates smooth navigation of tight parking areas and narrow roads.

Advanced Features
・ The Active Front lighting System (AFS) improves the driver’s sense of security while cornering at night by pointing the headlight units in the direction of the turn to illuminate the path of vehicle travel. Availability depends on type*10.
・ The Hill-Start Assist function temporarily maintains brake pressure after the brake pedal is released when starting on a hill to ensure smoother starts and prevent the vehicle from rolling backward*11.
・ A side-view support mirror shows road surface conditions up to 7m in front of the left-front wheel, increasing the driver’s sense of security when parallel parking or navigating narrow roads.
・ A multi-view camera system uses cameras to provide views of surrounding areas to support comfortable and safe driving. Availability depends on type*12.

Safety Performance
・ The Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure enhances self-protection while also mitigating damage to other vehicles in the event of a frontal collision. The body is also designed to help mitigate pedestrian injuries in the event of a collision.
・ The Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) with seatbelt E-pretensioners (driver and front passenger) is designed to help monitors potential rear-end collisions and alert the driver to take evasive action, mitigating injuries and vehicle damage in the event of an accident. Availability depends on type*13.
・ A driver-side i-SRS airbag system with continuously staged inflation, standard on all types, accommodates a broad range of occupant positions and potential collision situations.
・ A front-seat i-side airbag system (equipped with passenger seat positioning detection system) and side-curtain airbag system (rows one to three) is designed to help reduce the risk of head injury in a side impact for occupants in all three rows. Availability depends on type*14.

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has announced its lineup of production and concept-model automobiles, motorcycles, power products and other highlights for its display at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show 2009. Organized by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, the event will take place at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, from October 24 to November 4.

Covering the largest floor area of any single brand at the show, Honda booth combines automobiles, motorcycles, power products and other highlights to present the distinctive world of Honda mobility. Driven by dreams and passion, and with the booth concept of “Creating the never before!” Honda strived to propose attractive products that please and amaze its customers.

Honda’s automobile exhibit will present a variety of environmentally responsible approaches to mobility, including hybrid vehicles, a fuel cell electric vehicle and a battery electric vehicle. By linking solar panels that supply electricity with battery electric vehicles that emit zero CO2 in use, Honda envisions the low-carbon society of the near future. In addition, each HELLO! vehicle features interactive communication technologies that showcase the fun ways in which mobility devices can interact with people and society. On display will be the FCX CLARITY, a fuel cell electric vehicle that runs on the electricity it produces from hydrogen; the EV-N battery electric vehicle; the EV-Cub electric motorcycle; the EV-MONPAL electric personal mobility device; the new U3-X, a one-wheel personal mobility device that uses balance control technology that was developed through the ASIMO bipedal humanoid robot; and LOOP, a portable communication tool that allows people and mobility devices to communicate with each other.

The automobile display will focus on hybrid vehicles, which Honda believes offer one of the most practical means of addressing environmental concerns at the present time. Joining the Insight, which has been very well received since its release in Japan in February 2009, will be the CR-Z Concept 2009, a hybrid with a new sense and feel, making its world premiere.Underhood will be a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated up to Honda’s proprietary Integrated Motor Assist technology. Also on the menu will be a six-speed manual gearbox that will surely be a more entertaining partner for driving enthusiasts than the CVT automatic transmission used in the Insight hatchback.

While Honda is still calling the Tokyo-bound CR-Z a concept, don’t expect the attractive sheetmetal to be altered before the car hits the showroom floor. That’s fine by us – the car’s wedge-shaped lines are very attractive and call to mind the seminal CRX from the early 1980s, though with a modern flavor reminiscent of the current Insight. See for yourself in our gallery below.

, and the SKYDECK, an innovative six-passenger, multi-purpose hybrid vehicle. Other models on display are the all-new STEP WGN and STEP WGN SPADA (both scheduled for introduction in Japan in October 2009), which feature innovative packaging to expand the joy of using automobiles, and the all-new CIVIC TYPE R EURO (scheduled for introduction in Japan in November 2009), which captures the joy of driving, discovered and refined on European roads.

The motorcycle display will feature products filled with creativity and dreams that create new value that challenges the unique potential of motorcycles. Making its world premiere, the CB1100 explores the potential of the air-cooled, 4-cylinder engine while building upon the aesthetic appeal and riding taste of the generations of CBs. The VFR1200F sport touring bike, which will make its Japan premiere, emphasizes advanced technology and styling while offering an enjoyable riding experience. A VFR1200F equipped with the world’s first Dual Clutch Transmission for large-displacement sport bikes will also be on display. Advanced models that address environmental concerns include the PCX, an idle stop function-equipped global scooter that delivers outstanding fuel economy, and the EVE-neo, which achieves clean and tough performance that only an electric-powered scooter can provide.

Power products on display include two that are powered by small household-use butane gas canisters: the newly developed ENEPO generator and the PIANTA tiller, which has been well received since its introduction in Japan. Also on display will be the Stride Management Assist and Bodyweight Support Assist walking assist devices, which feature the cooperative control technologies developed through the robotics research of ASIMO, Honda’s bipedal humanoid robot.

Honda Develops New Personal Mobility Device With the Goal of Co-existing in Harmony with People — World’s first drive system that enables movement in all directions –

TOKYO, Japan, September 24, 2009 – Pursuing the concept of “harmony with people” Honda has developed a new personal mobility technology and unveiled U3-X, a compact experimental device that fits comfortably between the rider’s legs, to provide free movement in all directions just as in human walking – forward, backward, side-to-side, and diagonally. Honda will continue research and development of the device including experiments in a real-world environment to verify the practicality of the device.

This new personal mobility device makes it possible to adjust speed and move, turn and stop in all directions when the rider leans the upper body to shift body weight. This was achieved through application of advanced technologies including Honda’s balance control technology, which was developed through the robotics research of ASIMO, Honda’s bipedal humanoid robot, and the world’s first* omni-directional driving wheel system (Honda Omni Traction Drive System, or HOT Drive System), which enables movement in all directions, including not only forward and backward, but also directly to the right and left and diagonally. In addition, this compact size and one-wheel-drive personal mobility device was designed to be friendly to the user and people around it by making it easier for the rider to reach the ground from the footrest and placing the rider on roughly the same eye level as other people or pedestrians.

Honda is planning to showcase the U3-X at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show 2009 (sponsored by JAMA) which will begin on October 24, 2009 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan.

Striving to propose the next-generation mobility which expands the joy and fun of mobility, Honda has been conducting robotics research since 1986, including ASIMO, walking assist devices and U3-X, at the Honda R&D Co., Ltd. Fundamental Technology Research Center in Wako, Saitama, Japan.

* Based on Honda’s internal research

Key features of U3-X

1. Device control featuring application of balance control technology cultivated through ASIMO research:
The incline sensor detects the incline of the device based on the weight shift of the rider and determines the rider’s intention in terms of the direction and speed. Based on the data, precise control is applied to return the device to an upright position, which achieves smooth and agile movements and simple operation by weight shift only.

2. HOT Drive System (Omni-directional driving wheel system):
Honda developed the world’s first wheel structure which enables movement in all directions including forward, backward, side-to-side and diagonally. Multiple small-diameter motor-controlled wheels were connected in-line to form one large-diameter wheel. By moving the large-diameter wheel, the device moves forward and backward, and by moving small-diameter wheels, the device moves side-to-side. By combining these movements the device moves diagonally.

Honda Begins Production and Sales of All-new Scooter PCX in Thailand
– New strategic global model to be exported from Thailand to Japan, Europe and the U.S. beginning in 2010 –

BANGKOK, Thailand, September 14, 2009 – Honda will begin sales of a new scooter model, PCX, in Thailand in November of this year through A. P. Honda Co., Ltd., a Honda affiliate responsible for distributing Honda motorcycle products in Thailand. Thai Honda Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (Thai Honda), a Honda subsidiary that manufactures motorcycles, power products, and components in Thailand, will serve as the global manufacturing base for PCX and is planning to begin exports of PCX in early 2010, to other countries in the ASEAN region as well as other regions including Japan, Europe and the U.S.

With the global market in mind, PCX was designed to provide both the ease-of-use customers expect from a scooter and innovative styling. In addition, the basic design of key components such as the frame and engine are common for each market to achieve a significant increase in production efficiency.

Thai Honda began motorcycle production in 1967 for the Thai market, and currently supplies motorcycles and motorcycle components primarily to the ASEAN region. Thai Honda will supply PCX to the global market while leveraging its superior cost competitiveness, quality and supplier network which the company has cultivated during its more than 40-year history.

The PCX is equipped with a newly developed low-friction, water-cooled, 4-stroke, single-cylinder 125 cc engine, achieving excellent fuel economy of approximately 50km/liter (ECE 40 MODE). The “idling stop system,” which automatically stops the engine when the motorcycle comes to a temporary stop, was adopted to improve fuel economy (except for the U.S. model.) In addition, PCX conforms with Thailand’s Emission Standards at level 6 as well as the current exhaust emission standards in Japan, Europe and the U.S. with Honda’s electronic fuel injection system (PGM-FI*1) and a catalyst device (catalyzer) installed in the muffler.

Moreover, PCX will be the world’s first*2 125 cc model which will be equipped with the ACG starter which combines a cell motor and alternating current generator and helps achieve the compact engine size and significant reduction of starting noise.

Finally, all PCX models will be equipped with the CBS (Combined Brake System for the front and rear wheels) which helps achieve stable braking performance.

With PCX, Honda will strive to create a new market in ASEAN countries for a high value-added and high-end model. At the same time, Honda is planning to introduce PCX to Japan, Europe and the U.S. as an affordable small-size commuter model which accomplished an excellent balance of various features including environmental performance, user comfort and quality.
*1 PGM-FI (Programmed Fuel Injection) is a registered Honda trademark
*2 Based on Honda research
