Nissan’s NV200 concept van was one of the undoubted stars of the Hanover Show – and designer Ryoichi Kuraoka found an unlikely inspiration for its innovative demountable pod system. “It’s based on Thunderbird 2, the one with the pod,” he said.
The inspiration isn’t recent either. Kuraoka has been with Nissan since 1981 – his CV includes the 1992 Micra hatchback – and he’s been a original fan of the British puppet sci-fi series since the 1960s, when he saw episodes on Japanese TV as a boy. “I had the Tracey Island model too,” he said.
Sadly, cost rules out putting into production the ‘pod’ body of the concept, which slides out on rails and is supported by fold-down legs. But the NV200 will become a production reality early next year, when it replaces the Renault Kangoo-based Kubistar compact van in the Nissan range. It’ll go on sale first in Japan next Spring, with European sales before the end of 2009.

Mazda’s new catalyst uses oxygen stored within the base material as well as oxygen near the particulate matter.
Mazda Motor Corporation has developed a greatly improved clean diesel engine that offers output and environmental performance comparable to a gasoline engine. It will be progressively introduced to markets around the world, beginning in Europe in 2009.
The newly developed MZR-CD 2.2 clean diesel engine has a displacement ten percent greater than Mazda’s current MZR-CD 2.0-liter diesel, and achieves top class torque of 400 Newton meters. Improved fuel injectors and a lower compression ratio contribute to its enhanced fuel efficiency. Additionally, the engine’s diesel particulate filter (DPF) features a Mazda-developed world-first catalyst activation mechanism that enhances the removal of particulate matter (soot) from the exhaust gases. The new catalytic combustion treatment process enables the DPF to burn off particulate matter approximately 60 percent faster than current systems. Due to this technical advancement, the MZR-CD 2.2 is clean enough to qualify for the Euro 5 emissions standards. (This is based on a Mazda in-house assessment.)
Furthermore, the addition of a dual balance shaft and a more rigid engine block has resulted in a significant reduction in engine vibration, and helps achieve extremely quiet operation.

- Scheduled for launch in 2009, the system improves fuel economy of gasoline vehicles by around ten percent -
Mazda Motor Corporation has independently developed an idling stop system, called the Smart Idle Stop System (SISS), which improves fuel economy by about ten percent (in Japan’s 10-15 mode tests*1) in urban areas where vehicles frequently stop at traffic lights or in heavy traffic during operation. The SISS uses direct injection technology to achieve an excellent engine restart, ensuring drivers do not experience any discomfort with the new system. Mazda plans to introduce this core environmental technology to the marketplace in 2009.
Idling stop systems save fuel by shutting down the engine automatically when the car is stationary, and restarts it when the driver resumes driving.

September 3rd, 2008 — hybrid vehicle, nissan

Nissan is considering developing plug-in hybrid vehicles that can be charged at home, as it seeks to catch up with its rivals in fuel-sipping cars, an official said Wednesday.
Japan’s third-largest automaker is considering the move as consumers are increasingly switching to fuel-efficient cars due to high gasoline prices, spokesman Mitsuru Yonekawa said, declining to give further details.
Nissan has already conducted tests with an experimental model and is deciding whether to bring the car to market, according to local media.
Nissan has been slower than Toyota and Honda to embrace petrol-electric hybrids, seeing a brighter future for vehicles running entirely on electricity.
In an effort to close the gap with its rivals, Nissan is due to launch the first hybrid using its own technology in the United States and Japan in 2010.
