December 10th, 2007 — Auto Sale Ranking, honda, toyota

Honda Motor Co.’s redesigned Fit compact car overtook Toyota Motor Corp.’s Corolla compact as Japan’s best-selling car model in November, ending a 13-month streak for the Corolla.
Honda more than doubled sales of the Fit to 18,138 cars, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said in a release today. The carmaker introduced the revamped Fit on Oct. 26. Toyota’s Corolla took the second spot as sales fell 10 percent from a year earlier to 15,348.
Toyota claimed eight of the top 10 slots in last month’s sales rankings, excluding minicars. Nissan Motor Co., Japan’s third-largest automaker, took eighth place with the Serena minivan. Compact cars and minivans made up all of the top 10 models.
With minicars included, Suzuki Motor Corp.’s Wagon R was the second-bestselling model behind the Fit. Minicars are powered by engines no larger than 0.66 liters.
The following table shows Japan’s 10 bestselling automobiles, excluding minicars, in November by model, maker, sales, vehicle type and percentage change from a year earlier.

November 2nd, 2007 — Auto Sale Ranking
U.S. sales of Ford Motor Co. cars and trucks were down 9.5% in October, compared to the same period a year ago, bring the company’s results for the year down 13%.
Three of the company’s six wholly owned brands — Mercury, Lincoln and Land Rover — posted gains in the month. Sales of the Ford brand, Jaguar and Volvo were all down. The company’s volume Ford brand was down 13% in the month and is now down 15% for the year.
Trucks posted a small, 0.9% gain the month, while car sales plummeted 26% as the company continues to ease off sales to daily rental companies.
Other major automakers were scheduled to release their results throughout the day.
Industry experts are expecting October to be a weak month for most automakers, as a housing crisis continues to weigh on the U.S. economy and credit markets.

The second-best September haul ever closed out the third quarter with sales of 53,491 new vehicles taking the total so far this year to 451,326 units, or down 7.6% compared to the same period last year.
According to figures compiled by Toyota, September’s performance surpassed the mark set last year _ 49,383 vehicles _ but it failed to better the record of 55,137 units sold in the same month two years ago.
For the automobile industry, it was the third best monthly return this year _ after March (56,021) and August (54,163) _ and it helped arrest a sales slide that until then had been running at a high 9.4% compared to last year to 7.6%, a turnaround that can be attributed to improved political and economic conditions.
