Suzuki Motor Corporation is pleased to announce that the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization has selected the Wagon R minivehicle series for a 2008 Good Design Award* and the Jimny four-wheel-drive (4WD) minivehicle for a 2008 Long-Selling Good Design Award.
The judging committee said: “The latest design of Wagon R series inherits the boxy looks and good space utility that characterized the original model. Features including a distinctive headlamp shape and handsome grilles give a sense of the future. The look, which emphasizes movement without compromising roominess, inspires a certainty that it’s the form that small cars will take in the future. The cabin, which reflects efforts toward user-friendliness and economy, is also praiseworthy.”
The Long-Selling Good Design Award conferred on the Jimny is a special award intended to honour and highlight products that not only enjoy long-lasting popularity but also continue to inspire fresh thinking about manufacturing and lifestyles. Many recipients have been manufactured and marketed in accordance with their original product concepts for 10 or more years.

Japan’s fiscal first-half auto sales slumped to the lowest in 34 years as rising unemployment and decade-high inflation sapped demand for new vehicles.
Sales in the six months through September fell 2.9 percent to 1.54 million vehicles, the lowest since 1974, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said in a statement today. The total excludes minicars. Sales of cars, trucks and buses in September fell 5.3 percent to 310,992 from a year earlier.
Nissan Motor Co.’s sales dropped 5.3 percent in the six- mohth period as rising food and gasoline prices left consumers with less money for large purchases. The drop in domestic demand comes as Japan’s largest manufacturers turned pessimistic about their prospects for the first time in five years as the deepening U.S. financial crisis stifled demand in the country’s export markets.
“Current economic conditions are getting worse, which doesn’t help car sales,” said Yasuhiro Matsumoto, a credit analyst at Shinsei Securities Co. in Tokyo. “Carmakers are coming out with new minicars, the only models that seem to sell.”
The Tankan index of confidence among big makers of cars and electronics slid to minus 3 points in September from 5 in June, a fourth quarterly drop, the Bank of Japan said today in Tokyo. The negative reading means that pessimists outnumbered optimists for the first time since 2003.

It’s a new car but will have three different names. For the first time in the Indian automobile history, the same car—made in India—will don three different badges in the global market.
Maruti Suzuki, manufacturer of the car, will brand it A-Star in India. The same car will be contract-manufactured by Maruti for Nissan Motors and called Pixo. And it will be the new Alto for Suzuki Motor Corporation in Europe. The car will be manufactured exclusively by Maruti Suzuki’s plant at Manesar in Haryana and will be unveiled by both companies at the Paris Motor Show next month at their respective pavilions.
Both Nissan Pixo and Suzuki Alto will compete against Toyota Aygo in the international market while it will be pitted against Hyundai i10, Fiat Palio and Tata Motors Indica Vista in the premium small-car segment in India. An MSI spokesperson refused to comment and said: “A-Star has nothing to do with Alto, which will continue to be the flagship model of Maruti Suzuki in India. It is a totally different segment.”
