Toyota Motor Corp. has recently expanded the production of the Corolla compact passenger car at two of its North American plants, company officials told Jiji Press on Tuesday.
In North America, Toyota manufactures the Corolla in California and Canada, with annual production volumes reaching some 200,000 units and 160,000 units, respectively.
The two plants will increase their Corolla production for three months through December. As a result, their combined output should be 15,000-20,000 units more than earlier planned, the sources said.
Toyota has suspended the production of large-sized vehicles at three of its U.S. plants due to a growing inventory of unsold vehicles resulting from weak U.S. demand.
Toyota is now focusing on smaller vehicles with greater fuel efficiency that sell better in the U.S. market. To shore up sales, the automaker has launched zero interest campaigns on new auto loans.
Among other Japanese automakers, Honda Motor Co. has announced a plan to raise the output of its Accord passenger car in the United States while lowering the production of larger-sized vehicles such as minivans.
Thailand has become the regional production hub for all Toyota car models for export to Asean for both fully built units and assembly kits, according to Toyota Motor Thailand Co president Mitsuhiro Sonoda. The models include the Camry, Corolla Altis, Vios, Yaris and Wish compact multi-purpose vehicles (MPV).
With the all-new Corolla Altis sedan launched yesterday,Toyota Has positioned the car as a key product from its Thai plant for export to Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. Production in all three countries has already ceased. Before the Corolla Altis, only Toyota’s Hilux Vigo pickup trucks in Thailand were exported globally.
The new Corolla Altis is the first Toyota model in Thailand to be compatible with E20 gasohol.
The company plans to sell 2,600 units a month, Toyota Motor Thailand senior vice president Wichien Emprasertsuk said yesterday.
Manufactured in Thailand, the new model will also be exported to Asean markets. With engine capacity of 1,600cc and 1,800cc, it will be priced between Bt709,000 and Bt969,000.

Honda Motor Co.’s redesigned Fit compact car overtook Toyota Motor Corp.’s Corolla compact as Japan’s best-selling car model in November, ending a 13-month streak for the Corolla.
Honda more than doubled sales of the Fit to 18,138 cars, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said in a release today. The carmaker introduced the revamped Fit on Oct. 26. Toyota’s Corolla took the second spot as sales fell 10 percent from a year earlier to 15,348.
Toyota claimed eight of the top 10 slots in last month’s sales rankings, excluding minicars. Nissan Motor Co., Japan’s third-largest automaker, took eighth place with the Serena minivan. Compact cars and minivans made up all of the top 10 models.
With minicars included, Suzuki Motor Corp.’s Wagon R was the second-bestselling model behind the Fit. Minicars are powered by engines no larger than 0.66 liters.
