Toyota Motor Corp. expects to gain U.S. market share, but it will not match last year’s U.S. sales record, a top executive said Thursday.
Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager of Toyota’s U.S. sales arm, said 2008 will be the first time in 17 years that Toyota will not beat the prior year’s total sales in the United States.
“As the sales and marketing representative, I’d love to have 18, but it’s just not realistic in this environment,” Carter said.
Toyota sold more than 2.6 million Toyota, Lexus and Scion cars and trucks in the United States last year. This year, Carter said, Toyota believes it will sell up to 2.45 million vehicles, a decrease of at least 5.7%.
Toyota to Make Hybrid Engine Available on All Its Models

Hot off its success with its best-selling Prius sedan, Toyota Motor Co. announced Friday that it would make hybrid-engine systems available on all of its models by 2020.
The announcement came as all of the auto makers at an industry conference this week in northern Michigan maneuvered to carve out their own niches in fuel-efficient design, from expansion of the gasoline/electric hybrid technology already available in the Prius to the new plug-in hybrid vehicle known as the Volt under development by General Motor Corp.
Ford Motor Co., the Dearborn-Mich. auto maker with few of its vehicles with hybrid options, plans to double its hybrid-vehicle lineup and production next year. And Honda Motor Co. said this week at the Traverse City, Mich., conference that in 2009, it will import a new hybrid to compete directly against the new Prius in the U.S. market — and at a lower price.

Toyota’s net profit fell 28 per cent slump in its financial first quarter after a steep decline in US sales of trucks and sport-utility vehicles.
Japan’s biggest carmaker, which like other producers has seen demand for large vehicles plunge because of soaring fuel prices, said on Thursday it earned Y354bn ($3.2bn) in the quarter to June, down from a record Y492bn in the same period last year.
The results were slightly better than analysts had expected, however, in part because the company took a smaller charge than its rivals against a fall in the value of its leasing fleet.

Volkswagen AG moved ahead of Ford Motor Co. as the world’s third-largest automaker by vehicle sales in this year’s first half, according to figures the companies released last week.
Volkswagen reported a 7.2% increase to 3.31 million cars and trucks, while Ford said its sales fell 11% to 3.09 million.
Ford is headed for another decline in the annual global sales rankings, after yielding the No. 2 spot to Toyota Motor Corp. in 2003.
Ford’s U.S. sales fell 14% as gasoline prices rose above $4 a gallon, crimping demand for large pickups and SUVs. Its figures also exclude Jaguar and Land Rover, sold to Tata Motors Ltd. in June.
