HANOI, Oct. 7, 2007 (Thomson Financial delivered by Newstex) — Vietnamese motor vehicle sales rose 83 percent in the first nine months of the year, the Vietnamese Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA) said Saturday.

Sales shot up to 49,240 vehicles, against 26,934 in the corresponding period last year, VAMA said.

Passenger car sales between January and September were reported at 10,882 vehicles, a rise of 145 percent.

The figures were compiled from data from 16 of VAMA’s 18 members. Data were not available from the other two members.

The biggest rise in sales was recorded by Japan’s Honda Motor Co (NYSE:HMC) , which sold 2,729 locally assembled vehicles, 858 percent more than a year before.

Vidamco, a joint venture between South Korea’s GM Daewoo and a Vietnamese company, posted a 305 percent rise in sales.

In September alone, VAMA members sold 7,683 vehicles, 99 percent more than a year before.
